BINGHAMTON — Waverly dominated in the first meeting of the season, but Seton Catholic rallied here Wednesday afternoon to pull out a 4-3 win in STAC Central Division softball action.
The Wolverines won 15-2 at home on April 7, banging out 18 hits in the process, but only managed six Wednesday.
Waverly drew first blood with singled by senior Brinn Cooney and junior Maddie Cron to lead off the game.
With one out, 7th-grader Paige Bubniak lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Cron and give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
The Saints answered in the bottom of the first inning, then scored again in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, 8th-grader Ayla Wheeler led off with a single, and Cron laced a one-out single. Both runners scored on a two-run single by sophomore Hannah Carpenter that put the Wolverines up 3-2.
The Saints answered with two runs in the home half of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Waverly had a runner reach in each of the last two innings — senior Meghan Apgar on a two-out walk in the sixth, and Cooney on a one-out single in the seventh — but neither advanced past second base.
Cron singled twice and scored two runs, and Cooney singled twice to lead Waverly at the plate, while Carpenter singled and had two RBI. Ayla Wheeler singled and scored one run, and Bubniak had one RBI.
