
THE VALLEY — Athens and Sayre athletes will be in action at Day 1 of the District 4 Track & Field Championships, while the Tioga softball teams plays in the IAC Small School championship game for the fifth straight year.
TRACK & FIELD
District 4 Championships, 3:30 p.m. @ Williamsport H.S.: Athens will be competing in the Class 3A Championships, while Sayre will face the field in the Class AA Championships.
Class 3A Championships
Junior Abby Burgess is the lone top seed for the Wildcats, while senior Sara Bronson is a top-3 seed in three different events, and sophomore Graham Wanck is a 2-seed in two events.
Burgess is the top seed in the 100-meter dash at 12.22 seconds, and the third seed in the 200-meter dash in 25.75 seconds.
Bronson is the second seed in the 1,600-meter run at 2:20.76, and the second seed in the 1,600-meter run at 5:15.15. She is the third seed in the 3,200-meter run in 11:31.99.
Junior Evelyn Panek is the second seed in the high jump at 5-feet, and junior Lizzie Gorsline is the sixth seed in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.11 seconds.
BOYS
Wanck is the second seed in the 3,200-meter run, and is the second seed in the 1,600-meter run in 4:24.31, while senior Jase Babcock is the fourth seed in the high jump at 6-feet, 4-inches.
Class AA Championships
Sayre senior Rose Shikanga is the highest seed for the Redskins in the Class AA meet, and senior Marco Quiros is a top-5 seed in two events.
Shikanga is the third seed in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.93 seconds.
Quiros is the fourth seed in the 200-meter dash in 22.72 seconds, and is the fifth seed in the 400-meter dash in 50.51 seconds.
Tioga at South Seneca Invite, 2:30 p.m.: The Tigers close out the regular season in Section V at the South Seneca Invite.
SOFTBALL
IAC Small School Championship
Tioga (12-2) vs. Union Springs (16-0), 5 p.m. @ Watkins Glen H.S.: The Tigers are coming off an 11-3 win over Newark valley Tuesday, while the Wolves topped Moravia, 12-6.
Union Springs enters the game ranked seventh in the State in Class C, while Tioga is 17th.
In their first meeting this season, Union Springs topped Tioga, 13-1.
Last year, Union Springs won the regular-season meeting, but Tioga pulled out a 5-4 win in the IAC Championship game. Union Springs had the last laugh with a win over Tioga in the Section IV, Class C semifinals.
This is the fifth straight year, Tioga and Union Springs will meet in the Small School title game. Tioga won in 2021 and last year, while Union Springs won in 2022 and '23.
Waverly (8-9) at Owego (12-3), 5 p.m.: The Wolverines are coming off a 4-3 loss to Seton Catholic Wednesday, while the River Hawks rolled to a 12-2 win over Oneonta.
Owego won the first meeting of the season at Waverly, 9-8.
BASEBALL
Towanda (11-7) at Sayre (0-15), 4:30 p.m.: The Redskins are coming off a 10-0 loss to Troy Monday, while the Black Knights edged Cowanesque Valley, 5-4.
