ENDICOTT — Junior Gavin Albrecht, who broke his own school record, and senior Andrew Earley are headed to States after first-place finishes on Day 1 of the Section IV Track & Field State Qualifier here Wednesday afternoon at Ty Cobb Stadium.
After Day 1, the Tioga boys are tied with Oxford-Greene for second place with 16 points, just off the pace of Day 1 leader Lansing, which has 18 points.
Albrecht won the pole vault, clearing the bar at a school-record height of 14-feet, 9-inches. Senior Ryan Chamberlain was sixth at 12-feet.
Albrecht eclipsed his own record of 14-feet, 7-inches, which he set earlier this season. He also automatically qualified for States by topping the "super standard" of 14-feet, 6-inches.
Earley won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 57.4 seconds to punch his ticket to States.
Junior James Miller finished fifth in a personal-best time of 1:00.54.
Earley ran the second-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries, clocking in at 15.77 seconds, and sophomore Elijah Bellis was seventh-fastest at 17.14 seconds.
Junior Dominic Palmer is in second place in the pentathlon after three events with 1,848 points.
Palmer was second in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.52 seconds, and second in the shot put with a heave of 39-feet, 1/4-inch. He was third in the high jump.
Senior Kam Joyce finished ninth in the 200-meter dash in a personal-best time of 23.76 seconds. He was 13th in the 100-meter dash in 12.0 seconds.
ROSSI PACES TIOGA GIRLS
Freshman Vida Rossi placed second in the long jump with a mark of 16-feet, 6 3/4-inches.
The 400-meter relay team of Rossi, juniors Ava Smolinsky and Mia Hall, and 8th-grader Grace Howey finished fifth in a time of 53.1 seconds.
Sophomore Sadie Marshall was 17th in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.53 seconds.
Day 2 action is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
