ATHENS — Athens built a 6-1 lead, and held off a late Towanda rally in a 6-3 win here Saturday afternoon in the opening game of pool play in the District 15 Minors Division softball playoff action.
Towanda scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Athens starter Hadley Liechty kept them off the board until the sixth inning.
Athens, meanwhile, scored single runs in each of the first three innings, then added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Towanda plated two runs in the top of the third inning, and had the tying run at the plate, but Liechty ended the game with a strikeout.
Liechty earned the win, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out 17 and walking two in six innings.
Livia Powers doubled and drove in three runs to lead Athens at the plate, while Ada Wilson singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Carly Bishop singled and had one RBI, and Nora Morales added a single.
Ava Rhodes scored two runs for Athens, while Liechty, Cece Shangraw, and Breah Wilcox scored one run, and Lindsay Ahern added one RBI.
Athens returns to action Sunday afternoon at RTL.
