
CANTON — Athens scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie on its way to a 6-3 win over Canton here Sunday in District 15 Little League Juniors Division baseball pool play action.
Evan Westerfield's two-RBI double in the top of the third capped a three-run Athens rally that put them ahead 3-1, but Canton answered with runs in the home half of the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 3-3.
After walks loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning, Brady Shores stroked a one-out two-run single to give Athens a 5-3 lead.
Shores pitched around a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning, and retired the side in order in the seventh to finish off the win.
Brady Boor stroked a one-out RBI single in the the top of the seventh for Athens to provide the final margin.
Westerfield doubled and singled, scored one run, and had two RBI, and Anthony Johnson singled twice and scored one run to pace Athens at the plate, while Shores singled and knocked in two runs, Boor singled and drove in one run and Graham Campbell added a single.
Elijah Delancey had one RBI in the win, and Cooper Hugo, Wes Alderfer, Kenson Hugo and Parker Smith each scored one run.
Cooper Hugo started on the mound for Athens, allowing two runs — one earned — on five hits, while striking out four and walking one in a no-decision.
Westerfield allowed one run on three hits, while striking out one and walking one in two innings of relief.
Shores earned the win with two innings of one-hit relief. He struck out one and walked none.
Athens, now 2-0 in pool play, finishes up pool play Tuesday at home against Southern Tioga-Brant.
