VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: TIOGA'S ALBRECHT TOPS SUPER 7 AS "'BOYS ATHLETE OF THE SPRING' (2025-06-28)

THE VALLEY — Tioga junior Gavin Albrecht achieved new heights — literally — to win a New York State title in the pole vault. He is the Valley Sports Report 2025 All-Valley "Boys Athlete of the Spring."

Albrecht went to States last year on the strength of a vault of 13-feet, 9-inches. This season, Albrecht set Tioga's school record at 14-feet, 7-inches, eventually winning state gold at 15-feet.

Albrecht was also a force in the 100-meter dash, and is closing in on the school record, and the long jump. He also ran on a successful 400-meter relay during the regular season.

Andrew Earley, senior, Tioga: Earley won the 110- and 400-meter hurdles, and was second in the triple jump at the IAC Championships. He won the 400 hurdles, was second in the 110 hurdles, and was fifth in the triple jump at the Class D Championships.

At the State Qualifier, Earley won the 400-meter hurdles, was third in the 110 hurdles, and eighth in the triple jump.

Earley finished off his career with a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles at States.

Jase Babcock, senior, Athens: Babcock was a mainstay of Athens' point-getters this season in the long jump, triple jump. and high jump. He finished second in the long jump and high jump at the NTL Championships.

Babcock made his bones, however, in the high jump. After clearing 5-feet, 10-inches at the NTL meet, Babcock cleared a personal-best mark of 6-feet, 5-inches to win District 4 gold. He was seventh in the triple jump, and eighth in the long jump.

At States, Babcock was 17th in the high jump, clearing 6-feet, 2-inches.

Brady Flynn, sophomore, Athens: Flynn, VSR's baseball "Player of the Year," and "Newcomer of the Year," hit .442 (23 hits in 52 ABs) with seven doubles, 23 RBI, 23 runs scored, and eight stolen bases in his first full varsity season. (He had 10 at-bats as a freshman.)

Flynn walked 12 times and was hit by one pitch for a .537 on-base percentage, to go along with a .577 slugging percentage for a 1.114 OPS.

On the mound, Flynn was 3-0 with a 1.97 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. He struck out 24 and walked six, while allowing 22 hits in 21 1/3 innings. Opponents hit .256 against him.

Shea Bailey, senior, Tioga: Bailey hit .462 (24 hits in 52 ABs) with five doubles, two triples, one home run, 19 RBI, 16 runs scored, and nine stolen bases. 

He walked seven times, and was hit by one pitch for a .516 on-base percentage, to go along with a .692 slugging percentage for a 1.208 OPS.

Bailey was also a very good shortstop, and had a solid season on the mound, where he was 1-3, and did not allow an earned run in 11 2/3 innings, while striking out 11. Opponents hit .222 against him.

Karter Green, junior, Sayre: A versatile player, Green hit .512 (22 hits in 43 ABs) with seven doubles, two triples, 14 RBI, 10 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases. He walked five times and was hit by pitches four times for a .596 on-base percentage, to go along with a .767 slugging percentage and a 1.364 OPS.

On the mound, Green was 1-6 with a 4.08 ERA, with 71 strikeouts and 12 walks in 36 innings.

Marco Quiros, senior, Sayre:
Quiros battled injury and sickness all season, and never quite reached the dominance he displayed in 2024.

Quiros won the 400-meter dash, and was second in the 100-meter dash at the NTL Championships. At the District 4 Championships, Quiros finished fifth in the 200-meter dash, but hit the state standard (22.75 seconds), running a time of 22.63. He was ninth in the 400-meter dash.

Quiros, who qualified for States in the 200 and 400 last year, finished 24th in a time of 23.66 seconds.
