NEW CASTLE, Del. — Waverly grad Zach Vanderpool, and McKendree University teammates Trevor Pense and Xavier Newell, as well as Corning-Painted Post grads Camryn Stefanini and Joseph Enderle brought home a host of hardware from the 8th Storm U.S. National Junior Team Challenge Bowling Tournament over the weekend at the Bowlerama Family Entertainment Bowling Center.

This tournament is a national event with teams competing in age divisions of 15 & under, 16-18, and collegiate level up to age 22. There were 51 teams present at the 5 person team event on Sunday with 13 of those teams in the collegiate division.

On Saturday, Vanderpool, Stefanini, and Enderle competed in the triples regular and triple Bakers. On Sunday, the trio competed in the five-person team Bakers Collegiate event along with Pense and Newell.

Vanderpool, Stefanini and Enderle threw a three-game series of 1,741 to win the Triples event, topping the second-place team by 77 pins.

Stefanini led the way with a 611 series on games of 226, 259, and 126, while Vanderpool shot a 567, including a 209 in the third game, and Enderle had a 563, including a 223 in the first game.

In the Triple Bakers, the trio rolled a 660 series on games of 186, 258, and 218 to top the second-place team by 97 pins.

In the 5-person Collegiate Tournament, Vanderpool Stefanini, and Enderle were joined by Pense and Newell, and bowled 10 qualifying games before entering bracket match play.

Their 10-game total of 1,748 tied them for fourth-best, but left them as the fifth seed as the result of high-game tiebreaker. The top qualifying score was 1,836.

The team entered match play, which was a best 2 out of 3 to advance to the next round.

In the first round, they won 2-0 against the 12th-seeded team on games of 180-164 and 195-130.

Next, they bowled against the 6th-seeded team winning that series 2-1 by scores of 179-165, 168-210, and 179-141.

In the semi-final round, they bowled against the 13th-seeded team and won that series 2-1 by scores of 175-146, 165-173, and 223-133.

The championship round was a best-of-five series against the seventh-seeded team. The team won the championship, 3-1, by scores of 164-154, 189-172, 157-188, and 195-132.

Vanderpool, Pense, and Newell bowl collegiately for McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill., while Enderle bowls for Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan., and Camryn Stefanini transferred to Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa and will bowl there in the fall.

A shoutout to folks and staff at the local bowling centers who have run summer leagues and open bowling so these guys could be prepared to go and compete successfully: Crystal Lanes, Ripics Carousel Lanes, and the Valley Bowling Center.
