WAVERLY — Elmira scored five goals in the first 19 minutes of the game, and cruised to a 10-0 season-opening win over Elmira here Tuesday night in non-divisional STAC boys soccer action at Memorial Stadium.
"There's lots of potential with this team," said Waverly coach Jon Rankin. "(Elmira) is a wake-up call, (and) we knew that going in.
"The underclassmen held their own and stepped up to help their teammates the best way they knew how," noted Rankin. "I can’t ask for more than that.
"We will make our corrections for our next game and go from there," he added. "We will comeback with a better strategy for the next game."
Dom Capilli, who registered a hat trick, scored in the 6th minute of the contest, and Hayden Rolls scored less than a minute later to give the Express a quick 2-0 lead.
Capilli and Chase Christian scored goals two minutes apart to make it 4-0 after 14 minutes, and Kaelan Brenen-Buscek made it 5-0 in the 19th minute.
Myles Caprelli capped the first-half scoring with a penalty kick with 7 seconds remaining in the first half to make it 6-0.
Capilli finished off his hat trick just two minutes into the second half, and Brody Snyder, Chase Smith, and Parker Coleman finished off the Express barrage of goals.
