NEWARK VALLEY — Tioga scored three goals in about 8 minutes midway through the second half to rally for a 5-3 win over Newark Valley here Tuesday afternoon in IAC girls soccer action.

"Things are starting to click for us," said Tioga coach Emily Potter.

"We started out pretty rough, but the girls are starting to figure it out," she noted.

"Coach Schanbacher and I are very proud of the hard work, and momentum they have going," added Potter.

Newark Valley's Annika Smith started the scoring for the Cardinals on a perfectly-placed direct kick over the head of the Tioga keeper with 16:20 remaining in the first half.

Less than two minutes later, Tioga freshman Grace Howey tied the game at 1-1 with 14:26 left in the half.

Neither team dented the other's defenses for more than 25 minutes until NV's Aubrey Kwiatkowski launched another perfectly-placed direct kick over the head of the Tioga keeper to make it 2-1 with 29:05 left in the game.

About five minutes later, Howey again weaved her way through the Cardinal defense to score an unassisted goal to tie it at 2-2.

Three minutes later, Howey, who had a hand in all five Tiger goals, fed Natalie Kemp, who deposited a shot into the back of the net, to make it 3-2 with 21:13 remaining.

Senior Sophia Haney, again off a feed from Howey, scored with 16:09 left in the contest to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead.

The Cardinals closed the gap to 4-3 on a penalty kick by Aubrey Kwiatkowski with 9:08 left in the game, but Howey completed her hat trick about four minutes later to provide the final margin.

Tioga, now 2-2, returns to action Monday at O-M.
