ATHENS — Five different players scored goals to lead Athens to a 6-0 win over Galeton here Saturday afternoon in NTL boys soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats are 5-0-1 on the season, and have not allowed a goal.
Junior Noah Thompson scored two goals, and senior Chase Ingram had one goal and one assist to pace the Athens offense.
"It was a great game by the boys today," said Athens coach Travis Reynard. "We finally started to play the two-touch soccer we have been training and were able to switch the ball well.
"We kept another shut out and are getting better and better every day, which I am glad to see."
"We got great offensive play by our strikers and midfielders today," noted Reynard. "They were not selfish and found the passes into the channels and made smart decisions up top.
"We still need to improve on our finishing and capitalize on our chances, but overall much better performance today than our last few games," he added. "It’s always good to see a wide range of names in the goal scoring column even from players off the bench like Noah Thompson who put in one of his best games of the season today."
Ingram scored an unassisted goal about 6 1/2 minutes into the game to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0.
With 9:15 remaining in the first half, junior Noah Thompson collected a loose ball after a shot by Ingram caromed off the post, and deposited it into the back of the net to make it 2-0, which is where it stood at the half.
About 2 1/2 minutes after the intermission, freshman Chase Gombocz took a cross from junior Wheeler and drove it past the Galetoon keeper to extend the lead to 3-0.
Senior Eli Vogell and Thompson scored goals in a three-minute span midway through the half to make it 5-0.
Sophomore Patrick Umber finished off the scoring, taking a cross from freshman Caden Brennan.
Athens had a 23-0 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
"All credit to our defense for not allowing a single shot to be taken on-target," said Reynard. "We were strong, and won our 1-v-1 battles and played very well out of the air, which has often been a problem this season."
Athens returns to action Wednesday at Towanda.
