WAVERLY — Sophomore Lilly Boothby-Schoonover scored from close range midway through the second half to give Waverly the lead, and the Wolverine defense made it stand in a 2-1 win over Chenango Valley here Wednesday n night in STAC Central Division girls soccer action at Memorial Stadium.

Sophomore Maci Wheeler put the Wolverines on the board with a corner kick less than two minutes into the contest, but the Warriors answered 4 1/2 minutes later on a long-range lob shot off the foot of Tiffany Schaefer to tie the game at 1-1.

"It was an interesting start to the game with Maci’s corner kick going in and being ahead that early," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. "Then. with CV making the goal from a lobbed shot from the 30-yard line, it got interesting real quick.

"We were happy with the amount of shooting the girls did," noted Hogan.

"Kait Sutton really set the pace up top by running every ball down and getting some great opportunities," added Hogan.

With 23:33 remaining in the contest, junior Ryleigh Judson crossed the ball to the top of 6, where Boothby-Schoonover took a quick touch to settle the ball, then fired a hard shot past the keeper to make it 2-1.

"Lily’s goal was fantastic," said Hogan. "We love that Lily isn’t afraid to use her body and she followed the cross from Ryleigh (Judson) very well.

"It wasn’t just a little tap in, either," added Hogan. "She had great power behind it."

Hogan said the Wolverines had to shuffle its defense a bit due to an injury.

"With losing Haley Larrabee to a bad ankle injury, we moved Maddie Cron back to defense, and she did a great job alongside Makenzie (Olmsted) and Kendall (Rockwell)," said Hogan.

"Ryleigh stepped in to help out on the outside-mid position and did very well," added Hogan. "And, Maci Wheeler and Gianna Soprano worked very well together in the middle of the field."

Waverly had a 14-12 edge in shots-on-goal, and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior Claire Clonch had seven saves in net for the Wolverines.

Waverly, now 3-4-1, hosts Susquehanna Valley Friday at 5 p.m. on the turf field at the high school.
