CONKLIN, N.Y. — Chenango Valley made some adjustments at halftime and opened up its lead on a young Waverly team en route to a 5-0 win here Saturday night in STAC Central Division boys soccer action.
"We held them to 0-1 at the half, due to a very strong defensive presence," said Waverly coach Jon Rankin. "We made some changes and they seemed to work out very well for us.
Our offensive components were slightly off and let to us hitting the frame or being off by a step.
"Overall, a much better match for us," noted Rankin. "They’re a strong team and once they made their corrections, they were able to pinpoint some weaknesses and exploit them. They were able to score off of two penalty kicks.
"I’m proud of the hustle the boys had, if the other team doesn’t get two PKs, it’s a much tighter game," he added.
SV scored one goal in the first half on a penalty kick, and led 1-0 at the intermission.
The Sabers blew the game open with four second-half goals.
SV had a 19-10 edge in shots-on-goal.
Waverly returns to action Tuesday at Newark Valley.
