GROTON — Groton scored midway through the second half to pull out a 3-2 win over Tioga here Monday afternoon in IAC Small School crossover boys soccer action.

Groton and Tioga traded goals in the first half and went to the intermission tied at 2-2.

"It was a great back-and-forth game," said Tioga coach Donnie Van Dusen. "We just can't seem to come out on top.

"The boys played all-out today and I couldn't be more proud," he noted. "We have to clean up the little things and shore-up our touches.

Its tough to win a statistical battle and come up empty. We are in these games, we just need to do the little things to come out on top.

"Hats off to the kids, though most of them played 80 minutes of back-and-forth soccer," added VanDusen.

Groton scored about 12 minutes into the contest to take a 1-0 lead, but Brady Landmesser countered with a goal less than two minutes later to make it 1-1 with 26:17 remaining in the first half.

The Red Hawks scored with 6 1/2 minutes left int he half to take a 2-1 lead, but James miller tied game at 2-2 with a goal with 1:11 remaining in the half.

Groton scored the eventual game-winner with 20:01 remaining in the contest.

Van Dusen said a line-up change helped the Tigers' offensive attack.

"We moved Jace Schanbacher into the striker position and James (Miller) back into a midfield position and we saw a lot of good things from that," said Van Dusen.

"At the end of the day, though, it was just another outcome we just couldn't finish the way we wanted," he added.

Tioga had an 18-13 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

David Van Dusen had 10 saves in net for the Tigers.

Tioga, now 1-6, hosts Groton Wednesday.
