WYALUSING — Athens rode a strong defensive effort and a pair of timely goals to a 2-1 win over Wyalusing here Tuesday afternoon in NTL girls soccer action.
"It was a great effort by all the girls today," said Athens coach Rich Pitts.
"Defensively we are just playing at a high level," he added.
Junior Brinley Nichols scored early in the game to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead, which it would maintain through the halftime intermission.
Senior Abby Burgess added an insurance goal early in the second half to make it 2-0.
Addison Bly put the Rams on the board late in the game to close the gap to 2-1.
Athens had a 13-6 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 13-4 edge in corner kicks.
"Offensively, we showed real flashes of being able to break games open," said Pitts.
Sophomore Annika Lezak had three saves in ent for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 5-3, hosts league-leading Troy Thursday.
