WAVERLY — Waverly tied the game early in the second half, but Chenango Forks regained the lead less than a minute later on its way to a 3-2 win here Monday afternoon in STAC Central Division girls soccer action at the high school field.
"We seemed very flat today," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. "It was a warm October day, and we’re playing at our high school field.
"We made costly mistakes with our defenders just not seeing wide-open players and giving Forks players point-blank shots.
We had a few solid passing combinations but just couldn’t finish," noted Hogan. "We had opportunities, but our finishes were directly played to the Forks keeper."
Junior Makenzie Olmsted put Waverly on the board with a penalty kick just 83 seconds into the game, but Forks scored twice in a 2 1/2-minute span late in the first half to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Sophomore Maci Wheeler connected on a shot from outside the 18 to tie the game at 2-2 with 31:33 remaining in the contest, but CF's Maggie O'Connor answered with a long-range shot of her own just 51 seconds later to make it 3-2.
Hogan tipped her cap to several of her players.
"(Keeper) Claire (Clonch) had another great game.
"Kaylin Twedt seemed to really stand out tonight, she was making good crosses and running down the ball no matter where it was," said Hogan.
"Kait Sutton had a few solid opportunities, while Ryleigh Judson and Maci Wheeler both got a few shots off," she noted.
"We keep telling Maci to take those shots from distances and she did just that," he added.
Waverly had a 28-25 edge in shots-on-goal, and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Clonch recorded 25 saves in net for the Wolverines.
Waverly, now 6-5-1, returns to action Wednesday at Chenango Valley.
