WAVERLY — Chenango Valley jumped out to a 5-0 lead on its way to a 6-1 win over Waverly here Thursday night in STAC Central Division boys soccer action.
Despite the score, Waverly coach Jon Rankin said his Wolverines continued to show signs of improvement.
"Tonight was another step in the right direction," he said. "We let up an early goal in the first half, then quickly got together and kept CV at bay until the final minutes of the first half."
CV's Kosta Battisti scored his first of two goals late in the first half to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
CV scored three more goals and led 5-0 midway through the second half.
Waverly got on the board when senior Peyton Robinson took a through-ball from Jesse Lantz, and beat the CV keeper 1-v-1 to close the gap to 5-1.
"The run and the passes leading up to the goal are what we have been working on specifically these past few weeks," said Rankin. "To have them connect and score against a team like CV is a big win for us."
CV had a 21-4 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Waverly junior Aiden Doherty recorded 14 saves in net for the Wolverines.
"Aiden Doherty was amazing tonight," said Rankin. "None of their goals were easy ones for them. He was able to get a piece of every ball that came through and did a great job commanding his box.
"He’s come a long was from the 8th-grader I had years ago," added Rankin.
Waverly, now 3-12, wraps up its 2025 campaign Wednesday when it hosts
Tioga.
