Valley Sports ReportWILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Tioga grad Tyler Roe, a sophomore on the Stevens Institute wrestling team, placed fifth in the 165-pound bracket of the Ned McGinley Invitational here Saturday at King's College.
Roe, the fourth seed, opened the day with a 13-7 decision over Mason Mordan of King's College.
Roe and Morgan traded takedowns and escaped in the first period, which ended at 4-4.
Roe collected another escape and picked up a stalling point to take a 6-4 lead into the final two minutes.
After Mordan escaped to start the third period, Roe scored another takedown and collected another stalling point to go ahead 10-5.
Roe tacked on another takedown 20 seconds later to score his final points.
In the round-of-16, Roe scored a fall of New York University's Alex Kaufmann in 2:10. Roe second takedown, which put him ahead 6-1, turned into a fall moments later.
In the quarterfinals, Roe dropped a 14-5 major decision to Viviano Gutierrez of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Roe scored the initial takedown of the bout, then tied the score at 4-4 with an escape early in the second period. Gutierrez registered a pair of takedowns in the final 62 seconds of the second period to take a 10-5 lead into the final two minutes, where he sealed the win with an escape off the whistle and a takedown in the closing seconds.
Roe bounced back in the consolation round-of-8 with a 23-7 technical fall of Cortland's Tristan-Robinson July in 6:43.
Roe collected three takedowns and a penalty point in the opening three minutes to take a 10-3 lead in the second period, where he tacked on another takedown to build his lead to 13-4.
In the third period, Roe scored a quick escape to make it 14-5, then registered three more takedown to end the bout.
Roe won a no contest when his consolation semi-final opponent had already wrestled his maximum amount of matches for the day. The fifth-place match was also a no contest.
Stevens Institute opens its dual season Thursday when it hosts Arcadia University.
