CLARION, Pa. — Tioga grad Gianni Silvestri, a sophomore on the University of Buffalo men's wrestling team, was 2-2 here Saturday in the season-opening Clarion Open.

Silvestri, the seventh seed in the 141-pound weight class, dropped an 8-2 decision in the opening round to Spartan Combat's Yianni Marinis.

Silvestri, who transferred from Clarion and posted a 14-16 record there last year, bounced back in the second round of wrestlebacks with a 5-0 win over Clarion freshman Talan Mizenko.

Silvestri scored a quick takedown in the first period, and rode out Mizenko for the final 2:44 of the first period.

After a scoreless second period spent upright, Silvestri notched a quick escape to start the third period. He added a riding-time point for the final margin.

Silvestri scored a late reversal to pull out a 6-5 win over Pitt-Johnstown freshman Elijah Brosius in the first consolation round-of-8.

After a scoreless first period, Silvestri scored a takedown in the second period, but Brosius escaped for the second time in the stanza to close the gap to 3-2 entering the final two minutes.

Silvestri extended his lead to 4-2 with an escape, but Brosius scored a takedown with 32 seconds remaining to take a 5-4 lead.

With 8 seconds left, Silvestri registered a reversal for the 5-4 win.

In the second consolation round-of-8, Southern Illinois' Danny Martinez scored a first-period takedown on his way to a 7-0 win over Silvestri.

Buffalo returns to action Saturday when it hosts Pitt in its first dual of the season.
