QUEENSBURY — Waverly’s Hayden Montanye and Chase Hine put together solid performances in their debuts at the New York State Boys Class C Cross Country Championships here Saturday.
Montanye, a sophomore, placed 87th with a time of 18:04.8 while Hine, a junior, finished 97th, clocking 18:25.5.
“We are extremely proud of the performances Hayden and Chase put forth today at Queensbury,” coach Nate Culver said. “It’s extremely difficult to maintain the high level of competitiveness and intensity needed after such a demanding season, but they both demonstrated the resilience and determination that got them there in the first place.”
By the time the Wolverine duo stepped to the starting line with 122 other competitors, the nearly 600 runners who had traversed the 5,000-meter course before them had turned an overnight freeze into a slippery, and in some places, sloppy layout.
“The goal to break 18 minutes as an all-time 5K PR was almost accomplished by Hayden as a sophomore,” Culver said. “Chase was just behind despite fighting illness, rallying to clock a time close to his stellar sectional performance.
“I couldn’t be prouder of how these young men represented our school and Section IV at their first state meet appearance. We are excited to see them both build upon today in the track and XC seasons to come.”
