THE VALLEY — Tioga will face its biggest challenge of the season Sunday afternoon in the New York State, Class D semifinals when it matches up against Section VI champ Newfane, led by Division I prospect Mac Capen.
Capen, a dual-threat QB, rushed for 1,872 yards and 32 TDs, and passed for 1,193 yards and 11 TDs, with just one interception.
The Panthers have outscored their opponents by an average of 43.8 to 13.1 points per game. Their closest game was a 28-20 win over Wilson in the Section IV title game.
Newfane advanced to the state semifinals with a 75-12 win over Section V champ Avon.
Tioga, which lost its season-opener 9-7 to Class C Windsor, has won 11 in a row, beating seven state-ranked teams, including Section III champ Lowville, 28-14, in the state quarterfinals.
The game was originally scheduled to be played Friday afternoon, but was moved to Sunday due to a "lake-effect snow storm" that enveloped Central New York.
