Valley Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — Senior Emma Vanderhoof won the 132-pound bracket and was named the "Most Outstanding Wrestler" here Saturday at the Bea Stephens Girls Wrestling Scramble.
Senior Elona Holmes, freshman Gianna Rylott and 7th-grader Amelia Wright were each runners-up, and junior Kennadie Cochrane and freshman Abi Reedy were third-place finishers for the Wolverines.
Seventh-grader Aniya Rought and freshman Gianna Zieniuk each placed fifth in their weight classes, and junior Abby Sickler, 8th-grader Jilliana Presser and sophomore Faith Hyjek were sixth-place finishers.
Vanderhoof was 5-0 to win the 132-pound bracket. She beat the first-period buzzer with falls to finish pool play at 2-0.
Vanderhoof scored back-to-back falls in 11 seconds in the quarterfinals and semifinals, then forged a hard-fought, 15-9, win over Homer's Brielle Nels in the finals.
Holmes was 4-1 to finish second in the 185-pound weight class.
Holmes scored four falls in the pool play — the first three in 40, 38 and 26 seconds, but lost via fall in the first-place match to East Rochester standout Bailey Morrison.
Rylott finished 5-1 to finish second in the 107-pound weight class. She won her first three bouts via 10-0 technical falls, then lost via fall to eventual champ Sonya Dordoni of Horseehads.
Rylott finished off her day with a second-period pin and another 10-0 technical fall.
Wright was 3-0 in pool play — all via first period falls in her first three varsity matches, then pinned Horseheads' Lily Vesek in 2:27 in the semifinals.
Wright lost via a 14-1 technical fall to East Rochester's Talulah Williams-Johnson in the finals.
Cochrane was 3-1 to finish third in the 114-pound bracket. She recorded a fall over Tioga's Taylor Sindoni in her only pool play match, then decked Sidney's Isabelle Quinones in 37 seconds in the quarterfinals.
After a 12-0 loss to Corning's Lauren Mahon in the semifinals, Cochrane scored a 14-4 technical fall win over Penfield's Mikayla Albro in the third-place match.
Reedy was 4-1 to finish third in the 165-pound weight class. She scored a 49-second fall and a 10-0 technical fall win in her first two bouts, then lost via fall to Homer standout Molly Sorenson.
Reedy bounced back with a 64-second fall to finish pool play at 3-1, then pinned Newark's Ky Williams in 3:52 in the third-place match.
Rought dropped her first three varsity matches, but bounced back to win two of the next three to finish fifth in the 100-pound weight class. Her first career win was a 12-2 technical fall over East Rochester's Sophie McClaren. She scored a 10-0 technical fall to close out the day.
Zieniuk was 4-1 to finish fifth in the 152-pound bracket. She won her first match with a 74-second fall, and her second with a 12-2 technical fall to finish pool play at 2-0.
Zieniuk lost via fall to Tioga's Marcy Moniz in the quarterfinals, but bounced back with falls in 1:14 over Sydnie McCloe of Harpursville-BGA-CV, and in 2:59 over teammate Jilliana Presher in the fifth-place match.
Presher scored a 6-4 win over McCloe to open pool play, then had a 10-0 technical fall to finish pool play at 2-0.
After a loss to Horseheads' Lilly Garrabrant in the quarterfinals, Presher scored a second-period fall in the consolation finals, before falling to Zieniuk in the fifth-place match.
Hyjek was 2-3 to finish sixth in the 132-pound bracket. Both of her wins were by fall.
Freshman Natasha Lane was 2-2 to finish seventh in the 138-pound bracket. Both her wins were via technical falls — 10-0 and 20-10.
Senior Sydney Rosenbloom was 2-0 in pool play with a 10-0 technical fall and a 21-second pin, but was forced to injury default out of the tournament and finished eight in the 114-pound bracket.
Freshman Stephanie Furlong was 1-4 to finish eighth in the 185-pound weight class.
Eighth-grader Gabbi Sinsabaugh was 1-3 in the 126-pound bracket.
Waverly returns to action Friday at the Phoenix Girls Scramble.
