SINK LEADS WAVERLY CONTINGENT AT BUCK TOURNAMENT

JAMESTOWN — Senior Cooper Robinson placed second, and junior Matthias Welles was third in his weight class to lead a small contingent of Waverly wrestlers to a fifth-place finish at the Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Association Holiday Classic here at Jamestown Community College.

Also placing for the Wolverines were fourth-place finisher junior Rhylee Stotler, fifth-place finishers seniors Daltton Davis and Troy Beeman, and junior Parker Larson, and seventh-place finisher freshman Avery Bowman.

Powerhouse St. Francis won the team title with 333.5 points, while Corry was second with 194.5 points, Port Allegany was third with 184.5 points, Williamson was fourth with 168 points, and Waverly tallied 141 points.

Robinson, the top seed, was 4-1 to finish second in the 157-pound bracket.

Robinson scored a 17-1 technical fall win over Easton Pence of Randolph in the opening round, then edged Kyan Corneilius of Sharpsville, 3-2.

In the quarterfinals, Robinson dominated Cooper Hodak of Corry, 20-4, for a technical fall, then continued his roll with a 19-8 major decision over Port Allegany's fourth-seeded Isaac Postlewait in the semifinals.

In the semifinals, third-seeded Bryce DellaPenta of Eden edged Robinson, 5-4.

Welles, the second seed at, opened the tournament with a 22-second pin of Fredonia's Kaleb Quiles, then lost to seventh-seeded Madox Decker of Brockway via fall in 2:49.

Welles then rattled off four straight wins to finish third. He scored pins in 59 and 47 seconds, then beat Chattaqua Lake's Colton Hamilton, 9-2, in the consolation semifinals.

Welles avenged his earlier loss in the third-place match with a 6-5 win over Decker.

Stotler, the second seed at 126 pounds, was 4-2 to finish fourth.

Stotler scored a 17-2 technical fall in his opening match, then registered a pin in 79 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals, where he pinned Hunter Simonds of Williamson in 3:12.

In the semifinals, St. Francis' Brayden Kellison, the third seed, blanked Stotler, 8-0.

Stotler bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a pin of Port Allegany's Brennan Fillhart in 1:54, but dropped a 3-0 decision to Harbor Creek's Hunter Chew in the third-place match.

Davis, unseeded in the 138-pound bracket, was 7-2 on the weekend to finish fifth.

He scored back-to-back technical falls — 17-1 and 18-2 — to start the tournament, then lost to third-seeded Kole Hasseley of St. Francis in the third round.

Davis reeled off four straight decisions, including a 2-1 overtime decision over Letchworth's Justin Mann, before losing by fall to Hasseley in the consolation semifinals.

Davis finished off his weekend with a pin of Warren's Hayden Holden in 4:10 in the fifth-place match.

Larson, unseeded at 152 pounds, was 5-2 on the weekend without going a full six minutes on his way to a fifth-place finish.

Larson opened with a first-period pin and an 18-3 technical fall, before losing via first-period fall to top-seeded Jaxon Kraft of Maple Grove in the quarterfinals.

Larson bounced back with consecutive technical fall wins — 17-0 over St. Francis' Brandon Wiepert  and 19-2 over Brockport's Owen Courtney — before losing via second-period fall to St. Francis' Max McCarthy in the consolation semifinals.

In the fifth-place match, Larson pinned Letchworth's Nolan Kelly in 1:46.

Beeman, the top seed at 285 pounds, was 5-2 on the weekend to finish fifth.

He scored pins of 34 and 74 seconds in his first two bouts, before falling to eighth-seeded Owen Nickerson of Corry in 5:12 in the quarterfinals.

Beeman bounced back with a pin of Harbor Creek's Bryan Curry in 77 seconds, and a 4-0 decision over Portville's Ian Chamberlain.

In the consolation semifinals, Beeman lost via second-period fall to second-seed Zach Caldwell of St. Francis.

In the fifth-place match, Beeman scored a 10-2 major decision over Southwestern's Brayden Potter.

Bowman, the fourth seed at 118 pounds, was 4-2 on the weekend to finish seventh.

After a pin of Newfane's Evan Brown in 2:36, and a 15-0 technical fall of Beaver County Christian School's Grayson Stroupe, Bowman dropped a 6-0 decision to fifth-seeded Sean McDonald of Star Point.

Bowman answered with a pin of Sharpsville's David Miller in 3:17, then dropped a 17-6 major decision to Warren's Tanner Stuart in the consolation bracket's first round-of-four.

In the seventh-place match, Bowman rolled to a 12-3 major decision of Fredonia's Rocco Muscarella.

Junior Joey Mack was 0-2 on the weekend at 165 pounds.

SINK LEADS WAVERLY CONTINGENT AT DAVE BUCK MEMORIAL TOURNEY
ELMIRA — Waverly’s Hudson Sink captured runner-up honors at the Dave Buck Memorial Wrestling Tournament here Saturday.

Competing at 132 pounds, the 8th-seeded Sink knocked off three higher seeds en route to the finals.

He scored a 15-3 major decision over Jack Doshna of Marcellus in his first bout, then decked Moravia’s Jacob Endress in 20 seconds. 

Sink's third match brought top-seeded Joey O’Conner of Chenango Forks and Sink rolled to a 19-3 tech fall in 2:47. 

He had another quick match in the semifinals, dispatching fifth-seeded Colton Miller of Whitney Point in 46 seconds. 

The finals brought the second-seeded Jake Burton of Marcellus, who prevailed by fall in 1:58.

The Wolverines had a trio of sixth-place showings from Brooks Lathrop (150), Liam Arnold (215) and Jaxson Porter (285). They scored one victory apiece with Arnold posting a 38-second pin, Porter adding a 50-second fall, and Lathrop tacking on a fall in 1:08.

Triton Floyd (103) and Dom Musto (215) each placed, each going 2-3 on the day. Floyd scored falls in the first and third periods, and Musto recorded pins in the second and third periods.

Jax Myers was eighth at 165 with a second-period tech fall to his credit.

Also competing for Waverly were Joey Sandfort (118), Nico Ray (150), Murtagh McCarthy (165) and Devon Swank (285).
