ELMIRA — Sayre junior Jordan Brown had a pair of hard-fought battles Saturday at the Southern Tier Memorial and came out on both ends of 3-0 decisions, placing second in the 175-pound weight class here at the LeCom Event Center.

"Jordan had a real good weekend," said Sayre coach Ralph Warner. "I was really pleased with his quarter-final and a semi-final matches, he wrestled really well.

"Obviously, the finals didn't go as we wanted," noted Warner. "We got a little lazy in our ties on our feet, gave up a takedown and just couldn't get one back.

"We needed to push the pace a little bit more being down 3-0 and needing to get a takedown, so really just need to pick up the pace and the intensity."

In the semifinals, Brown, the third seed, topped second-seeded Greg Golden of Thomas A. Edison, 3-0.

After a scoreless first period, Brown scored a reversal with 14 seconds remaining in the second period to take a 2-0 lead.

He tacked on an escape midway through the third period.

In the finals, Brown squared off with South Williamsport's fourth-seeded Jayden Hamm, who edge top-seeded Jack Converse of Watertown, 2-1, in the semifinals.

Hamm scored a takedown with 7 seconds remaining in the first period, and the remainder of the match was spent with both wrestlers fending off the other's takedown attempts.

Warner was also pleased with his other wrestlers, led by fresh Brian Roof, who was 1-2 Friday.

"Our freshman Brian Roof had a tough first match that could have went a lot better, but wrestled well in his second and got a win," said Warner. "Then we're 6-0 in our next wrestleback match ... he came back and got it to 6-4, but just couldn't turn the kid, and there wasn't enough time to cut and get a takedown.

"Amicio (LaManna) and Mason (Allowed) both went 0-2, but they are brand new wrestlers as a freshman and sophomore," he noted.

"I'm really pleased with the work that they're putting in," added Warner. "They are showing up every day and putting it in, and it shows in how far they have come in these two or three months."

LADY REDSKINS' BROWN FALLS IN 'BLOOD ROUND'
Senior Mikyah Brown, who was 2-1 Friday, lost in the blood round to Oneonta's Leyland Wiltshire via a 10-0 technical fall in 1:34 in her only match of the day.

"Mikyah had a great first match (Friday)," said Warner. "In her second match, she got caught in a near-fall criteria and hurt her arm ... in freestyle the match is over if you have to call out in while you're in near-fall criteria

"She won her next two to make it to the blood round today, but had a tough one," Warner added.

Warner was pleased with the other girls' performances as well.

"It wasn't a bad weekend for the girls," said Warner.

"Chaylynn Roloson got a win, her first varsity win," he noted.

"Isabel Stamile, another new freshman, wrestled well and had a close second match, losing 8-6 with a short time left before she got pinned.

"All in all, I am very pleased with the work these kids are putting in and how far they've come," added Warner.
