Valley Sports ReportINDIANA, Pa. — Junior Zaine Campbell and first-year senior Brenden Comstock each registered four wins, but came up short of the podium here over the weekend at the rugged Mid-Winter Mayhem wrestling tournament at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Athens finished 34th in the 57-team field with 48 points. Nationally-ranked Bishop McCort won team gold with 201.5 points, while Chestnut Ridge was second with 162.5 points, Northampton was third with 158 points, Montgomery was fourth with 122.5 points, and Altoona and North Allegheny tied for fifth with 121 points.
Campbell, Comstock and junior Connor Davison, who was 3-2, reached the consolation bracket second round-of-8, while sophomore Treyton Barrett, who was 3-2, and junior Lucas Persun reached the consolation bracket round-of-16.
Campbell won his first two matches in the 127-pound bracket — an 18-3 first-period technical fall and a 40-second fall.
In the round-of-16, Campbell dropped a wild 14-13 decision to North East's Rocky Kowle. Campbell led 6-1 after the first period, but Kowle rallied to lead 9-6 after the second period.
After two third-period takedowns by Campbell, Kowle escaped and scored a takedown with 16 seconds remaining to take a 14-12 lead. Campbell was awarded a point for a technical violation in the closing seconds to provide the final margin, but Kowle was able to ride him out for the win.
In his next two matches, Campbell posted dominant tech falls — 19-1 in 1:22 and 18-3 in 3:01.
Campbell was eliminated by Berlin's Lukas Smith in an 11-1 major decision.
Comstock lost a 5-0 decision in the opening round of the 285-pound bracket, but reeled off four straight wins in the consolation bracket.
Comstock's first win was an 8-1 decision over Altoona's Khamden Thompkins, then he scored a fall over Penn Manor's Jacob Nesmith in 4:56.
Comstock kept it rolling with a pin of Dubois' Jason Gardner in 4:32, then edged Commodore Perry's Matthew Chess, 2-0.
Comstock was eliminated by Hatsboro-Horsham's Robert Ross via fall in 2:02.
Davidson opened with a 20-4 technical fall of General McLane's Logan Hayes, but lost a 12-9 decision in sudden-victory to Northwestern Lehigh's Vince Fugazzotto in the round-of-16.
Davidson bounced back with a 7-1 win over North Allegany's Brody Barnhart, and a 12-1 major decision over Bradford's Thomas Langdon.
Davidson issued a forfeit to Johnsonburg's Rocco Allegretto in the consolation bracket's second round-of-8.
Barrett opened with a 21-4 technical fall of Mid Valley's Nicholas Hricenak in 2:49 in the 145-pound bracket's round-of-16.
After losing via third-period fall in his next bout, Barrett scored a 21-6 technical over West Allegany's Mason Bryan at the second-period buzzer. He followed that up with a 10-5 decision over Altoona's Reese Hite.
In the consolation bracket's second round-of-16, Barrett lost via third-period fall to Slippery rock's Aden Shay.
Persun was locked in a 9-9 battle with Cranberry Township's Aiden Thompson, when Thompson scored the fall with just 13 seconds remaining in the third period.
Persun bounced back with a 22-9 major decision over Greenville's Tyler Enterline, and a 10-8 decision over West Chester Rustin's Leo Flores, thanks to a takedown with 53 seconds remaining.
Persun was eliminated via second-period fall at the hands of Marion Center's Griffin Tinsman.
Senior Ryan Howard was 1-2 in the 160-pound bracket, with his lone win a 16-5 major decision over Abington Heights' Coen Holland in the first round of wrestlebacks.
Seventh-grader Chace VanDyke was 0-2, losing a 5-4 decision to General McLane's Luke Gray, and a 20-13 decision to Benton's Sam Cumberland.
Senior Connor Garrison was 0-2 at 133 pounds, and junior Wyatt Clink was 0-2 at 139 pounds.

David Janiszeski was 3-1 and finished fifth in the 139-pound bracket. He lost his opening-round match, then won three straight.
Josh Saxon was 3-2 to finish sixth in the 107-pound weight class. He lost his opening-round match, then won three in a row to reach the fifth-place match.
Darious Miller (145 pounds), Israel Sensenig (152), and Wilson Kinsman (133) were each 2-2 in their respective weight classes.
Judah Nason was 0-2 at 189 pounds.
