Valley Sports ReportLIBERTY — Athens won the final 10 weight classes to overcome an early deficit on its way to a 59-17 win over North Penn-Liberty here Thursday night in NTL wrestling action.
The MountaineeRs jumped out an early 17-0 lead thanks to a technical fall by Bodhi Nickerson at 107 pounds, a pin by Charles Amuck at 114, and an Athens forfeit at 121.
Junior Zaine Campbell put the Wildcats on the board with a 19-4 technical fall win over Hoyt Pequignot.
Pins by senior Connor Garrison in 2:38 at 133 pounds, and junior Lucas Persun in 68 seconds at 139 pounds tied the match at 17-17.
The Wildcats took a commanding 35-17 lead on consecutive forfeits to freshman David Janiszeski at 145, sophomore Israel Sensenig at 152, and senior Ryan Howard at 160 pounds.
Junior Connor Davidson sewed up the win for the Wildcats with the quickest pin of the night, a 28-second decking of Terrell Rinebold to make it 41-17 with three bouts remaining.
Junior Brendan Cooke needed just 52 seconds at 189 pounds, and junior Landon Layman scored a third-period fall at 215 pounds to make it 53-17.
First-year senior Brenden Comstock received a forfeit at 285 to end the night.
Athens returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Towanda.
