WELLSBORO — Wellsboro raced out to a 17-point halftime lead, then held off Athens' furious fourth-quarter rally in a 40-33 win here Thursday night in NTL junior varsity boys basketball action.

Wellsboro led 12-5 after the first quarter, then used a 15-5 second-quarter blitz to take a 27-10 lead at the halftime break.

The Hornets added to their advantage in the third quarter and took a 37-17 lead into the final eight minutes.

Iziah Bailey scored four points and Griffin Smith knocked dhow a 3-pointer to fuel a 16-3 Athens blitz in the closing stanza that closed the gap to seven points.

Bailey led Athens with six points, while Avery Gorsline scored five, and Aiden Vanderpool, Hunter Brennan, and Smith shipped in with four points apiece.

Athens returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Towanda.
