Valley Sports ReportBINGHAMTON — Waverly got off to a hot start, but needed a strong finish to pull out a 48-41 win over Chenango Valley here Friday night in STAC Central Division girls basketball action.
The Wolverines knocked down five 3-pointers in the first quarter — two by sophomore Maci Wheeler, and one each by senior Kaitlyn Sutton, junior RYLEIGH Judson, and sophomore Kendall Rockwell — to take a 20-14 lead after the first eight minutes.
The Warriors, however, used a 12-6 run in the second quarter to tie the game at 32-32 heading into the halftime locker room, then outscored Waverly, 9-8, in the third quarter to lead 35-34 heading into the final eight minutes.
Sutton scored a pair of buckets early in the closing stanza, and Judson added another to give the Wolverines a five-point lead.
The Wolverines made 8 of 10 free-throw attempts down the stretch, including a 5-for-6 effort by Judson, to seal the victory.
Judson led Waverly with 17 points, while Sutton scored 12 points, and Wheeler and Rockwell added seven points apiece.
The Wolverines ended the game with eight 3-pointers, including two apiece by Wheeler, Judson, and Sutton, and one by Rockwell and senior Brilynn Belles.
Waverly, now 7-6, returns to action Thursday when it hosts Owego Free Academy.
