TIOGA JUNCTION, Pa. — Defense kept Athens in the game early until its offense found its footing here Saturday afternoon in a 31-17 win over Williamson in NTL girls basketball action.
The Wildcats were kept off the scoreboard in the first eight minutes one field goal and one free throw to Williamson standout Kenna Thomas, and trailed 3-0.
Junior McKenna Jarvis scored five points, including a late 3-pointer, in the second quarter in a 9-6 Athens spurt that sent the game into the halftime locker room tied at 9-9.
Senior Ava Hughes made the Wildcats' only field goal in the third quarter, but they made 8 of 10 free-throw attempts in a 10-5 spurt that gave the Wildcats a 19-14 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Hughes scored six more points in the fourth quarter, and junior Brielle Mayo added four points to fuel a game-closing 12-3 run by the Wildcats.
Hughes led Athens with nine points, and Jarvis scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds and notched three steals
Sophomore Alissa Vough had six points, six rebounds, and eight steals in the win, while freshman Alexis Mayo had four points, four rebounds and two steals, and Brielle Mayo added four points, three assists, and seven steals.
Athens, now 7-9, returns to action Tuesday at home against Sayre.
JV: Athens 39, Williamson 13: Stella Unger led Athens with 15 points, and Bilikula Wennie added 11 points.
