Valley Sports ReportCORNING — Senior Emma Vanderhoof and freshman Gianna Zieniuk led Waverly to three dual wins and a team title here Saturday at the Coning Girls Wrestling Duals.
The Wolverines topped Canandaigua Academy, SVEC, and Corning in the round-robin tournament.
Waverly 30, Canandaigua 29
The Wolverines only won two matches on the mat, but picked up four forfeits in a 30-29 win over Canandaigua Academy.
Seventh-grader Aniyah Rought (100), freshman Gianna Rylott 107), junior Abby Sickler (114) and 8th-grader Gabbi Sinsabaugh picked up forfeits to give Waverly an early 20-0 lead.
Emma Vanderhoof scored a 10-0 technical fall win for Ryleigh Frarey at 132 for Waverly to make it 24-5.
Waverly also picked up a team point with 7th-grader Amelia Wright's 12-2 technical loss at 138 pounds.
Zieniuk sealed the win for the Wolverines with a pin of Ka`Leah Johnson at 152 pounds to put them up 30-14 with three weight classes to go.
Waverly 43, SVEC 6
Sickler topped Taylor Zufall 14-9 at 120 pounds in Waverly's only win on the mat in its 43-6 win over SVEC.
The Eagles' only other wrestler, Tayah Beach, scored a fall at 120 pounds.
Rought, Rylott, Vanderhoof, Wright, 8th-grader Jillianna Presher, Zieniuk, and senior Elona Holmes received forfeits for the Wolverines.
Waverly 38, Corning 14
Waverly won six of the eight contested weight classes in a 38-14 win over Corning.
Sinsabaugh and Zieniuk each scored 10-0 technical falls for the Wolverines in the win.
Sinsabaugh, Vanderhoof, Wright, Presher and Holmes each recorded pins in the win.
Sickler also picked up a team point for the Wolverines with a technical fall loss.
Waverly returns to action Feb. 13 at the Section IV Championships.
