WILLIAMSPORT — Sayre junior Jordan Brown won his first two matches Saturday in convincing fashion, but dropped his next two to finish sixth here at the District 4, Class AA Wrestling Championships at Williamsport High School.
With the sixth-place finish Brown advances to next weekends Northeast Regionals. (The top seven in each weight class advance in Class AA.)
"Jordan (Brown) looked great in his first couple matches, but in the consolation semis and the fifth-place match, I don't think he wrestled to his potential," said Sayre coach Ralph Warner.
"Bottom line is we need to wrestle better on our feet," noted Warner. "With that one-minute first period, you have to go get one (takedown).
"I just thought there was a lack of intensity and a lack of urgency," added Warner.
After losing via technical fall to eventual third-place finisher Nolan Savage of Line Mountain Friday, Brown, the third seed, scored a pair of technical falls Saturday in the consolation bracket of the 172-pound weight class.
Brown opened his day with a 15-0 technical fall of Caius Morrow of Southern Columbia in 3:35.
Brown scored a takedown with 16 seconds remaining in the first period, then scored two sets of four near-fall points to take an 11-0 lead into the final two minutes.
Brown finished off the match four more near-fall points just 35 seconds into the third period.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Brown scored a takedown of Milton's Jackson Wertz midway through the second period as part of a seven-point move, then added four more near-fall points later in the period to take an 11-0 lead into the final two minutes.
Wertz scored a takedown about 30 seconds into the third period, but Brown quickly reversed him to his back in a six-point move for a 17-2 technical fall in 3:45.
In the consolation semifinals, South Williamsport's fourth-seeded Jayden Hamm scored the only takedown of the match midway through the third period in a 3-1 win over Brown.
In the fifth-place match, fifth-seeded Blane Wesneski scored a reversal just 12 seconds into the second period, then scored a takedown with 14 seconds remaining to take a 5-1 lead into the final two minutes.
Wesneski iced the 7-3 decision with a reversal midway through the third period. He rode out the final 57 seconds.
The Northeast Regionals are Williamsport High School Friday and Saturday night.
"We're going to have to wrestle better than we did today," said Warner. "There are no off matches."
