Valley Sports ReportBETHLEHEM, Pa. — A quintet of Athens wrestlers will take the mat here Friday night for Day 1 of the PIAA Northeast Class 3A Regionals at Bethlehem-Liberty High School.
The following are the opening-round match-ups for the five Wildcat wrestlers — District 4 champs Lucas Persun, Campbell, Connor Davidson and Brendan Cooke — all juniors, District 4 runner-up Chace VanDyke, a freshman, and senior Ryan Hoard, a fourth-place finisher, who was called up as an alternate to wrestle:
107 Pounds
Freshman Chace VanDyke (18-12) will square off with Kyle Phouansouvanh of Academy at Palumbo (19-11) in the opening round.
127 Pounds
Junior Zaine Campbell (21-7) will face Roman Catholic's Jayden Monroe (13-15) in the opening round.
133 Pounds
Junior Lucas Persun (22-8) will face Northampton's Matthew Sommer (21-12) in the opening round.
160 Pounds
Senior Ryan Howard (12-16) will face Wilkes-Barre Area's Liam Evanko (34-7) in the opening round.
172 Pounds
Junior Connor Davidson (25-8) will square off with Whitehall's James Hopkins (31-9) in the opening round.
189 Pounds
Junior Brendan Cooke (25-6) will face Bethlehem Catholic's Conner Gillihan (31-8) in the opening round.
The top five in each weight class advance to Hershey and the PIAA Class 3A Championships.
