NEW YORK, N.Y. — Tioga grad Caden Bellis, a freshman on the Penn wrestling team, was 2-2 to finish fifth in the 174-pound weight class here Sunday at the Ivy League Championships at Columbia University.
In the quarterfinals, Bellis, the fourth seed, scored a takedown at the second-period buzzer at 4-4, then recorded an escape and picked ups point for riding time in a 6-4 win over fifth-seeded Haden Bottiglieri of Harvard.
Bellis dropped an 18-2 technical fall to Cornell's top-seeded Simon Ruiz, who is ranked No. 2 in the country, then dropped a 9-4 decision to Brown's Drew Clearie in the consolation semifinals.
In the fifth-place match, Bellis scored a takedown with 6 seconds remaining in the first period to score first on hie way to a 6-3 win over Bottiglieri.
Up 3-2 midway through the second period, Bellis scored a reversal to make it 5-2.
Bottiglieri cut Bellis to start the third period, making it 6-3, and the duo spent the entire period on their feet.
Bellis finishes off his season with a 15-13 record.
Cornell won the Ivy League title with 132 points, while Columbia was second with 118 points and Penn was third with 116.
