THE VALLEY — The 2026 winter season wraps up Saturday with Day 2 for the Athens swim teams at the PIAA Swimming & Diving Championships, and with two Valley bowlers at the New York State Division 2 Championships at the AMF Syracuse Lanes.

SWIMMING & DIVING
PIAA, Class AA Championships, 8:05 a.m. @ Bucknell Univ.:
On Saturday, the Wildcats will compete in four more events with senior Penelope Grubb in the 1-meter diving competition and Pettitt in the 100-yard breaststroke, while the same Athens foursomes that swam the 200 free relays Friday will swim the meet-closing 400-yard freestyle relays Saturday.

BOWLING
New York State Individual Championships, @ AMF Syracuse Lanes:
Waverly senior Derek Johnson will compete at 8 a.m. in the boys tournament, while Tioga senior Kelsey Helmich will compete at noon in the girls tournament.

Johnson will be making his fourth appearance at the state tournament, but the first in the individual championships after three years in a row in the Division 2 Team Championships with the Wolverines.

Johnson has gotten better each year at States with six-game averages of 191.5, 202.2, and 217.2 the last three years.

Johnson is carrying a 212 average this season, and placed third at the Section IV Championships.

Helmich, who won the Section IV State Qualifier with a nine-game set of 1,759, carries a 173 average into her first appearance at States.
