Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Senior Porter Daddona threw five one-hit innings, and the Waverly bats came alive late in a 4-1 win over Chenango Forks in STAC Central Division baseball action on a wet and rainy Wednesday afternoon.
"Porter (Daddona) did an outstanding job tonight, especially with the cold and rainy conditions," said longtime Waverly coach Kyle McDuffee.
"He pounded the strike zone from first pitch to last pitch," he noted. "He did a great job.
"Then Axel (Murray) relieved and just continued the same pace with throwing strikes to end the game," McDuffee added.
McDuffee said Daddona and Murray had some help.
"Our defense did a great job taking care of ball, and Bennie (Shaw) called a great game behind the plate," said McDuffie.
Eli Scofield doubled off Daddona's second pitch of the game, and scored on consecutive ground ball to give the Blue Devils a quick 1-0 lead, but it was the only hit Daddona yielded.
Scofield also tossed three shutout innings before the Wolverines got to him in the fourth inning.
With one out, junior Matthias Welles legged out a single, then scored when junior Justin Koenig ripped the next pitch to right field for an RBI triple to tie the game at 1-1.
Moments later, junior Ben Shaw plated Koenig with an infield RBI single to make it 2-1. Shaw later scored on an error to give the Wolverines a 3-1 lead.
Waverly tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning when senior Hogan Shaw, who ended up on third base after consecutive wild pitches, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Jack Pipher to make it 4-1.
Daddona allowed one run on one hit, while striking out six and walking two in five innings to earn the win, and Murray retired all six batters he faced, including three strikeouts, to record the save.
Koenig tripled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Ben Shaw singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run to pace Waverly's four-hit attack, while Welles and Hogan Shaw each singled and scored one run, and Pipher had one RBI.
Waverly, now 2-0, returns to action Monday at Seton Catholic.
