WAVERLY — Freshman Taylin Gonzalez threw five strong innings, and junior Hannah Carpenter powered Waverly's offense in a 13-1 five-inning win over Seton Catholic in STAC softball action on a rainy and cold Wednesday afternoon.

"It was a good win for us," said Waverly coach Brent Doane. "Everybody had opportunities tonight.

"Our pitching was improved over our first-game performance, which I was happy to see," he noted. "We were also able to apply more pressure on their defense than we did in the last game as well.

"Overall, it was a good step forward for us," added Doane.

Carpenter belted a two-RBI double to key a four-run first inning for the Wolverines.

Carpenter hit another two-run double in the second inning as Waverly plated six runs to make it 10-0.

Waverly tacked on a run in the home half of the third to extend the lead to 11-0.

The Saints plated an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning to close the gap to 11-1, but Waverly walked it off via the 12-run mercy rule in the home half of the frame on back-to-back RBI singles by Carpenter and 8th-grader Paige Bubniak.

Gonzalez allowed an unearned run on one hit, with five strikeouts and two walks in five innings to earn the win.

Carpenter had three hits, including a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had five RBI to pace Waverly's 11-hit attack, and junior Lecksie Douglas stroked three singles, and scored four runs.

Senior Maddie Cron singled and scored three runs in the win, while Bubniak singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, Gonzalez singled and scored one run, freshman Ayla Wheeler and junior Sofia Storelli each added a single, and senior Delaney Wheeler scored one run.

Waverly, now 2-0, returns to action Tuesday at Norwich.
