SECTION IV FLAG FOOTBALL: WAVERLY OVERCOMES EARLY DEFICIT IN 27-7 WIN OVER CORNING (2026-04-01)

CORNING — Senior Brilynn Belles threw two TD passes, junior Makenzie Olmsted scored two TDs, and 8th-grader Meeya Wheeler had a key pick-6 to lead Waverly to a 27-7 win over Corning in Section IV flag football action here on a cold and wet Wednesday night.

"I am really happy with the girls' effort again tonight in nasty weather," said Waverly coach David Shaw. "They continue to show up and work hard, so it’s always good when that happens and they see the results. 

"It was a total team effort again tonight which is great to see," added Shaw.

The Hawks got on board first with a short TD pass midway through the first quarter.

The Wolverines tied the game on a 9-yard TD pass from Belles to sophomore Ellie Cole with 1:32 remaining in the first half. Belles' pass to Olmsted for the point-after tied the game at 7-7.

With time winding down in the first half, Meeya Wheeler stepped in front of a Corning pass and raced 47 yards for a TD to give the Wolverines a 13-7 lead at the half.

"That was a huge play," said Shaw.

With 3:27 remaining in the third quarter, Olmsted scored on a 14-yard TD run. Belles' pass to senior Lizzie Robinson put Waverly ahead 20-7.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Belles connected with Olmsted on a 6-yard TD pass, and Belles' pass to Robinson for the conversion made it 27-7.

Belles completed 14 of 20 passes for 94 yards and two TDs, with one interception.

Sophomore Maci Wheeler led Waverly's receivers with six receptions for 50 yards, while Robinson had three grabs for 14 yards, Olmsted had three catches for 12 yards, and one TD, senior Avalynn Boots added two catches for nine yards, and Cole had one catch for nine yards and a TD.

Olmsted led Waverly's ground game with seven carries for 35 yards and one TD.

Defensively, senior Claire Clonch had eight flag pulls, an interception, and a pass deflection, while junior Divinity Fischer had six pulls, Belles and freshman Gianna Rylott each had four pulls, and Meeya Wheeler added three pulls and an interception.

Waverly, now 3-0, hosts Chenango Forks Thursday night, and Syracuse Henninger Saturday morning.
