Valley Sports ReportWINDSOR — Waverly scored three second-quarter touchdowns en route to a 32-6 victory over Windsor in Section IV flag football action here Friday evening.
“Windsor has some very good athletes, and a new coach is doing a really good job,” coach David Shaw said. “We thought our girls did a pretty darn good job of executing our game plan, and played another very solid first half and got out to a nice lead.”
With a 7-0 lead in hand, the Wolverines made it 13-0 at 10:48 of the second quarter as Brilynn Belles connected with Mackenzie Olmsted for a 39-yard TD.
Mira Kittle made it 19-0 at 5:32 of the half with an 11-yard run, then Belles found Maci Wheeler open from four yards out with 29 seconds remaining in the half, giving Waverly a 25-0 cushion at the break.
Danika Smith put the Black Knights on the scoreboard at 7:28 of the third quarter when she broke loose for a 79-yard TD run, making it a 25-6 contest.
With 8:39 left in the game, Belles and Lauryn Welles hooked up for their second TD pass of the evening, this one a 31-yarder. Wheeler ran for the PAT to make it 32-6.
Belles and Welles connected for the team’s first TD of the game, an 8-yard pass at 6:57 of the first period. Kittle’s PAT run gave Waverly a 7-0 lead.
Belles would go 20-for-32 through the air for 233 yards and four TDs. She completed passes to six different receivers with Maci Wheeler making six receptions for 49 yards. Elli Cole grabbed four throws for 58 yards, Olmsted had three grabs for 52 yards, Welles snagged another three for 49 yards, Lizzy Robinson had two for 16 more and Emma Williams had two catches for nine yards.
On the ground, the Wolverines rushed for 151 yards with Kittle toting the rock a dozen times for 98 yards. Five other players carried the pigskin one time apiece. Belles and Meeya Wheeler had eight yards apiece, Avalynn Boots contributed six yards, and Adriana Purvis and Sierra Allen tacked on two and one, respectively.
Defensively, Claire Clonch led the team with 10 flag pulls. Lecksie Douglas grabbed seven, Kitt;e and Wells recorded four apiece, Meeya Wheeler had three, and Olmsted, Cole and Ava Fassett added one pull apiece.
Waverly improved to 6-0 in Section IV and 6-1 overall.
“We had a tough stretch there with five games in nine days, and we are very proud of the girls and the way they responded,” said Shaw. “We continue to have multiple girls contributing on both sides of the ball, which is nice to see. This is a good group who likes to put in the work, which is nice to see.”
Waverly gets a week off before traveling to Norwich next Friday.
“We will get back to work and continue to work on the little things and improve every day and see where the chips fall,” Shaw said.
