WAVERLY — Waverly pulled out four tie-breakers, including a third-set tiebreak, in a 7-0 sweep of Seton Catholic here Wednesday afternoon in STAC Central Division boys tennis action.
"It seemed like everything came together tonight," said Waverly coach Ron Chamberlain.
"Everyone's service game was improved," he noted. "They all hustled and used good judgment of where to place the ball.
"We had some slow first set starts ... the team's perseverance was on full display.
"And the sportsmanship of both teams was excellent," added Chamberlain. "It was a great dual match."
In the match of the day, Waverly Logan Roskow pulled out a three-set win over Seton Catholic's Cooper Guy.
Roskow won the first-set tiebreaker 7-5 for a 7-6 win, but Guy bounced back to win the second set, 7-5.
In the third-set tiebreak, Roskow won a 10-6 decision. (The high school tiebreaker is the first player to 10 points — win by two.)
Nathan Kellogg and Nathan McEwen won the second and third singles in straight sets.
Kellogg swept past Sean Lee 6-2 and 6-2, and McEwen swept Dominick Williamson, 6-4 and 6-2.
Trent VanDyke made it a clean sweep in the fourth singles, topping Jack Bouton 7-6, thanks to a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker, and 6-3.
All three Wolverine doubles wins were in straight sets.
Finn Williams and Tammo Bruns won by scores of 6-0 and 6-1 in the first doubles, while Kamden Sorenson and Alvin Gao swept by scores of 6-2 and 6-3 in the second doubles.
Owen Fassett and Dakota French closed out the match with wins of 7-6, with a 7-0 win in the tiebreaker, and 6-2.
