BUFFALO — Sayre’s Attilio Agnellino competed among the region’s top young swimmers at the Eastern Zone Age Group Championships and swam to two top-14 finishes here March 27–30 at Erie Community College’s Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
Representing WAAC, Agnellino placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.44 seconds, and 14th in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.1 seconds against a highly-competitive field.
The Eastern Zone brings together top swimmers from across much of the eastern United States, including New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and the New England states.
Qualifying for this level requires athletes to meet demanding time standards and consistently perform throughout the season. Agnellino continued that trend in Buffalo, improving his times and earning a top-eight finish in finals competition.
His performance marks a significant achievement on one of the sport’s premier age group stages and highlights the continued growth and success of athletes training through the Waverly Area Aquatic Club.
Agnellino is now in his third season swimming for the Waverly Area Aquatic Club (WAAC), a year-round USA Swimming program that develops athletes from beginner to elite levels. His progression through the sport has followed the competitive pathway from local meets, where swimmers first achieve qualifying times, to Niagara LSC championship meets such as the Gold Championships, and ultimately to the Eastern Zone Championships.
