BINGHAMTON — Freshman Taylin Gonzalez tossed a 2-hitter, and hit a pair of home runs to lead Waverly to a 7-3 win over Chenango Valley here Tuesday afternoon in STAC Central Division softball action.
"It was a very good win tonight," said Waverly coach Brent Doane.
"We got a great performance from Taylin Gonzalez tonight on both sides," he noted. "And, Kaiya Horton pitched in with a couple of good hits and a great catch in right field on the run at the end of the game.
"A few of our bats are struggling, but some others stepped up," added Doane. "It was great to see."
Waverly jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a one-out single by senior Maddie Cron and a two-run blast over the right-field fence by the lefty-swinging Gonzalez.
Junior Hannah Carpenter tried to re-ignite the rally with a single, and senior Delaney Wheeler and freshman Ayla Wheeler added two-out singles to load the bases, but a strikeout with the bases loaded ended the threat.
CV answered with a run in the home half of the inning, and Waverly led 2-1 after two innings.
In the top of the third inning, Gonzalez led off with a single, and scored on a one-out RBI double by 8th-grader Paige Bubniak to make it 3-1.
Waverly added a run in the top of the fifth on a one-out double by Bubniak, who moved to third on a single by Delaney Wheeler, and scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-1.
Two Wolverine errors and a wild pitch resulted in a CV run in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 4-2.
Junior Kaiya Horton led off the sixth inning with a double, and moved to third on a one-out single by Cron to put runners on first and third. Two pitches later, Gonzalez belted a three-run home run to make it 7-2.
Gonzalez homered twice and singled, scored three runs, and had five RBI and Bubniak doubled twice and singled, scored one run, and drove in one run to pace Waverly's 15-hit attack, while Cron singled twice and scored twice, and Horton doubled and singled, and scored one run.
Delaney Wheeler singled twice in the win, while Carpenter, Emma Williams, and Ayla Wheeler each added a single.
Gonzalez allowed three runs — two earned — on two hits, while striking out — including the 100th of her career — and walking six.
Waverly, now 3-3, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Chenango Valley.
