WAVERLY — Oneonta plated six runs in the top of the sixth inning to blow open a close game on its way to a 13-3 win over Waverly here Thursday afternoon in STAC softball action.
The Yellowjackets took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, thanks to a pair of Waverly errors.
Junior Hannah Carpenter led off the home half of the second inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a squeeze bunt by senior Delaney Wheeler to tie the game at 1-1.
Oneonta strung together three straight singles in the third inning to score a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead.
Delaney Wheeler's RBI double in the bottom of the fourth closed the gap to 3-2, but Oneonta answered with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
Junior Lecksie Douglas scampered home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning to trim the deficit to 5-3, but that was as close as the Wolverines would get.
In the top of the sixth inning, Jenevie Gallusser's one-out grand slam gave Oneonta a 9-3, and the Yellowjackets would tack on two more runs with two outs to extend the lead to 11-3.
The Yellowjackets tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh to provide the final margin.
Gallusser homered, doubled, and singled, scored three runs, and had five RBI to pace Oneonta at the plate.
Wheeler doubled and drove in two runs, and Carpenter doubled and scored two runs to pace Waverly's five-hit attack, while junior Kaiya Horton, 8th-grader Paige Bubniak, and senior Maddie Cron each added a single, and Douglas scored one run.
Waverly, now 4-4, returns to action with home games against Addison at 11 a.m. and Vestal at 1 p.m.
