GROTON — Freshman Kate Kithcart hit a pair of inside-the-park home runs in the first inning, and 8th-grader Olivia Shugars tossed a 1-hitter to lead Tioga to a 17-2 five-inning win over Groton here Monday in IAC Small School softball action.
The Tigers took immediate control of the game with 12 runs in the top of the first inning. The rally featured a two-run homer by Kithcart to make it 2-0, and a three-run inside-the-parker to make it 11-0.
Sophomore Kyah Nelson also had an RBI double, 8th-grade Maddy Rogers stroked an RBI single, and senior Lilly Mezzatesta capped the rally with an infield-the-park home run.
Kithcart had three hits, two runs scored and five RBI to pace Tioga's 15-hit attack, while Shugars had two hits, including an inside-the-park home run, two runs scored and two RBI, Nelson doubled and singled, scored two runs, and knocked in one run, Mezzatesta had two hits, three runs scored, and one RBI, and senior RaeAnne Feeko singled twice, stole two bases, and scored two runs.
Rogers singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs in the win, while freshman Irie Lynch singled and scored three runs, junior Vanessa Tunnicliff singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Cheyenne Moyers singled and drove in two runs, and freshman Bri Lounsbury scored one run.
Shugars allowed two unearned runs on one hit, while striking out six and walking none.
Tioga, now 8-2, returns to action Tuesday at Moravia.
