SAYRE — Cowanesque Valley plated seven runs in the top of the second inning to take control in a 12-2 five-inning win over Sayre here Tuesday afternoon in NTL Small School Division softball action at Riverfront Park.
Sayre took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Senior Olivia Thompson walked to lead off the home half of the first inning, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Rylee Lantz.
The Indians answered with seven runs in the top of the second, and four more in the third to take an 11-1 lead.
Thompson was hit by a pitch with one out in the third inning, ended up on third after a passed ball and a wild pitch, and scored on a single by sophomore McKenna Parrish to close the gap to 11-2.
Parrish singled twice and drove in one run, while Lantz singled and knocked in one run, while sophomore Emily Strickland and junior Zoey Ward each added a single to account for Sayre five hits, and Thompson scored a pair of runs.
Ward had the best turn on the mound for the Redskins, allowing one unearned run on three hits, while striking out one and walking none in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
Sayre, now 1-11, returns to action Thursday at Wyalusing.
