WINDSOR — Senior Ronin Ault pitched a complete game, and had another big day at the plate to lead Waverly to a 5-2 win over Windsor here Monday afternoon in STAC baseball action.
The Wolverines, ranked fourth in the state in Class A, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Axel Murray, but the Black Knights answered with two runs — the second coming on an error — to take a 2-1 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as senior Hogan Shaw belted a double and moved to third base on a wild pitch. After a walk to sophomore Jack Pipher, who stole second base, Ault plated both runners with a two-RBI single to right field to make it 3-2.
Junior Justin Koenig added a two-out RBI single to plate Ault for a 4-2 lead.
The Wolverines added an insurance run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Koenig.
Ault, who allowed just one hit after the second inning, ran into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Ault walked the bases load, but re-grouped and fanned the final two batters to escape the jam.
Ault allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits, while striking out six and walking three in a seven-inning effort.
Ault stroked three singles, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, while Koenig was 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Hogan Shaw doubled and singled, and scored one run to account for Waverly's eight hits.
Pipher and junior Matthias Welles each scored a run in the win, and Murray had an RBI.
Waverly, now 15-1, hosts Norwich Tuesday.
