HORSEHEADS — Waverly sophomore Griff Walter and Tioga junior Jackson Bombard each played the Section IV Boys Golf Medalist Tournament here Wednesday at the Mark Twain Golf Course.

Walter, who birdied 395-yard, par-4 first hole, shot a 91 on the 6,656-yard, par-72 Mark Twain Course, while Bombard shot a 96.

"Qualifying for this tournament as a sophomore is an accomplishment and something (Walter) should be proud of," said Waverly coach Marc Felt.

"It wasn’t his best day, but the experience of competing at this level is valuable," he noted.

"Playing our season in the fall and coming back in the spring can be challenging, but he’ll learn from it and be better because of it," added Felt,.

Both Valley golfers shot slightly better scores on the front nine, with Walter posting a 45 on the front and 46 on the back, while Bombard shot a 47 on the front and a 49 on the back nine.

"Jack’s score really doesn’t reflect the way he hit the ball today," said Tioga coach Dave Sickler.

"It was just one of those days that he couldn’t score.

"It was a great experience and a great accomplishment making the qualifier today, especially being a first-year high school golfer," added Sickler.
