ENDICOTT — Tioga sophomore Vida Rossi earned a trip to the New York State Class C Track & Field Championships here Wednesday with a first-place finish in the long jump.
"I just wanted to get out and get a good mark, to know that I was set," said Rossi, who said she'll look to fine-tune her approach heading into States.
"I definitely need to work on my speed and my run-up to make sure that's on-point," added Rossi.
Rossi won the long jump with a leap of 17-feet, 4 3/4-inches.
Rossi was second in the 100-meter dash preliminaries in a time of 12.56 seconds and advanced to Thursday's finals. Freshman Grace Howey finished 14th in a time of 13.93 seconds.
Rossi and Howey teamed with freshman Natalie Kemp and junior Marshall to run the fifth fastest time in the 400-meter relay trials in a time of 52.5 seconds to qualify for Thursday's finals.
Sophomore Amber Bennett finished sixth in the pole vault with a height of 7-feet, 6-inches.
PALMER IN SECOND IN PENTATHLON AFTER DAY 1 OF STATE QUALIFIER
Oneonta's Beckett Holmes leads the Class C pentathlon after three events with 2,065 points. Tioga senior Dominic Palmer is second with 1,790 points, and senior Talon Wood is sixth with 993 points.
Palmer finished second in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.14 seconds, and Wood was sixth in 22.86 seconds.
Palmer was second in the shot put with a heave of 36-feet, 5 3/4-inches, and Wood was sixth with a mark of 25-feet, 6 3/4-inches.
Palmer finished second in the high jump at 5-feet, 5 3/4-inches, and Wood was fourth at 5-feet, 3 3/4-inches.
Day 2 of the State Qualifier begins at 5 p.m.
