ENDICOTT — Tioga senior Gavin Albrecht won Class C gold in the pole vault here Thursday at the Section IV State Qualifier to earn the chance to defend his state title next week at the N.Y. State Championships, while sophomore Vida Rossi bested the standard in the 100-meter dash and will also make the trip to States.

“I did all right, it got me to the state meet," said Albrecht. "I wanted 15-feet, 6-inches ... it's there next week though, so I’ve got another week to try it out.

“All I needed was that 13-foot opening jump, and I was
guaranteed States, so I was going for records today," Albrecht added.

Albrecht is aiming for another state gold, and a new school record.

“I'd like to come back with another championship, but I'd also like to hit that 16-foot bar," he said. "It's an inch above my coach's PR, and that's what I've wanted since I started jumping.

“I just need to keep the confidence high, with a short memory on each jump, and just go for it," Albrecht added.

Albrecht won the pole vault, clearing the bar at 15-feet.

Albrecht entered the competition at 13-feet, and cleared it on the first attempt.

After passing at 13-feet, 3-inches, Albrecht cleared 13-feet, 6-inches, 14-feet, and 14-feet, 6-inches on his first attempt, before missing on his first attempt at 15-feet.

He missed on all three attempts at 15-feet, 6-inches.

Senior Dominic Palmer, who had three second-place performances on Day 1, had a second- and third-place finish in Thursday's two events to place second in the pentathlon with 2,843 points — well off the pace on Oneonta's Beckett Holmes, who won Section IV gold with 3,291 points. Senior Talon Wood placed fourth with 2,004 points.

Wood won the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:54.81, and Palmer was second in 4:57.17.

Palmer finished third in the long jump with a leap of 17-feet, 11 3/4-inches, and Wood was fourth at 17-feet, 3/4-inch.
