ELMIRA HEIGHTS — Waverly scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, and cruised to a 17-4 three-inning win over Elmira Heights here Wednesday in the opening game of pool play in the District 6 Minors Division baseball playoffs.
Waverly, playing as the home team, scored five more runs in the second inning to take a 10-2 lead, and closed out the game with seven runs in the third inning to invoke the 10-run "mercy" rule.
Marcel Phillips doubled and singled, scored three runs, and drove in two runs, while Ryder Wolcott doubled and singled, scored three runs, and knocked in one run to pace Waverly's 12-hit attack.
Nate Eck doubled and singled and scored three runs in the win, while Henry Cheresnowsky doubled and singled, and scored two runs, and Ethan Gray Wright singled twice and had two RBI.
Keatley DeKay singled, scored two runs, and had one RBI for Waverly, while Easton Mathews singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, Leevi Sharpsteen scored two runs and drove in one run, and Ryker Roberts crossed the plate once.
Phillips started on the mound for Waverly, allowing two unearned runs in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked three.
Wolcott earned the win, allowing two runs — one earned — on one hit in two innings of relief. He fanned six and walked one.
Wyatt Cron walked the only batter he faced, but he was thrown out trying to advance to third base.
Waverly returns to action Friday when it hosts Corning-Painted Post.
