ATHENS — Athens scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to blow open a one-run game in an 11-3 win over Canton here Thursday evening in the opening game of pool play in the District 15 Minors Division softball playoffs.
Athens, playing as the visiting team, scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and 4-1 after 2 1/2 innings, but Canton scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to close the game to 4-3.
Adelaide Gorman, Breah Wilcox, and Morgan Robinson hit consecutive RBI singles in the top of the fifth inning to give Athens a 7-3 lead.
Athens added three more runs on a pair of Canton miscues to extend the lead to 10-3.
Ryleigh Robinson capped the rally with an RBI fielder's choice.
Wilcox had three hits, including a double, three runs scored, and two RBI to pace Athens' 12-hit attack, while Morgan Robinson had two hits, two runs scored, and three RBI, and Gorman singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run.
Jaelyn Ashby singled twice, scored one run, and knocked in one run for Athens, while Carly Bishop singled twice and scored one run, Addisyn Johnston singled and scored one run, Mary Frisbie scored one run, and Ryleigh Robinson drove in one run.
Wilcox earned the win, allowing three runs — two earned on six hits, while striking out nine and walking two in six innings.
Athens returns to action Sunday at Wellsboro.
