Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Athens opened pool play with a 14-1 win over Canton, but dropped a 9-4 decision to Towanda in District 15 Little League baseball pool play action.
Athens 14, Canton 1
On Saturday, a trio of Athens pitchers combined on a one-hitter in Athens' 14-1 four-inning win over Canton in the opening game of pool play.
Athens scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added seven in the sec1ond inning, and four more in the third to take a 14-0 lead.
Easton Hubbard struck out five and walked one in two innings of no-hit ball in the start for Athens.
Leo Loziere gave up one hit, while striking out one and walking one in one inning of scoreless relief, and Connor Robinson allowed one run on three hits, with two strikeouts in one inning of relief.
Loziere had three hits, including a double, and four RBI to pace Athens' 10-hit attack, while Wyatt Raupers singled twice, scored twice and had three RBI, and Parker Collum singled twice and scored three runs.
Connor Robinson singled, scored three runs and drove in one run in the win, while Bentley Stephens tripled, scored two runs, and knocked in one run, and Tucker Owens singled and scored one run.
Klase Bardo had two RBI for Athens, and Beau Hall scored one run, and drove in one run.
Athens, now 1-1 in pool play, hosts Sayre Wednesday.
Towanda 9, Athens 4
On Tuesday, Towanda blew open a tie game with five runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 9-4 win over Athens.
Towanda scored three times in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead, but Athens answered immediately with two runs in the home half of the inning to tie the game at 3-3.
After Towanda took an 8-3 lead, the teams traded runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth innings.
Leo Loziere and Bentley Stephens each singled and scored one run, and Wyatt Raupers added a single to account for Athens' three hits, while Connor Robinson and Klase Bardo each scored one run, and Easton Hubbard had one RBI.
Hubbard started on the mound for Athens, striking out six and walking one in three innings of one-hit scoreless work.
